Plus, oatmeal contains as much as 5 grams of protein per half cup and is considered 25 percent resistant starch, meaning oats can improve gut health through digestion.

3. Lower cholesterol
Because of its fiber, Springer says that oatmeal can help lower bad cholesterol or LDL, as well as stabilize blood sugar. According to the Mayo Clinic, soluble fiber can reduce cholesterol absorption into the bloodstream.

4. Helps live longer
Oatmeal is one of the best foods for longevity. According to a study published in the Nutrition Journal, oats can help lower the risk of autoimmune disease, heart disease, and even weight gain. Plus, consuming whole grains regularly has been shown to lower mortality rates, according to the American Heart Association.

5. Low in sugar
While some oatmeal is unhealthy because of added sugar, it’s best to go for classic plain oats that are free of added sugars, artificial flavors, and hydrogenated oils.

“[Oatmeal] can be a very tantalizing and nutritious breakfast, but it’s important to choose quality oatmeal. Most oatmeal packages contain lots of added sugars and flavorings that can dilute nutrients and won’t provide all of the benefits that oatmeal has to offer, “says Springer.
