5 Benefits of Reading the Same Book Over and over to Toddlers
At home, you have prepared several books for your little one. The hope is that he will read them all and have more to learn. However, it is still the same book, that again, that again. Does that mean the book you chose doesn’t appeal to him?
Relax, you are not wrong, really, by buying a variety of books for him. Toddlers aged 2 or 3 years really crave reps. They like everything that repeats itself, including the books they read. Now, reading the same book over and over to toddlers has a variety of benefits. What are some?
1. Developing Vocabulary
You may worry that reading the same book all the time will make their study space narrower. Dont worry, Dr. Joanne Cummings, a clinical child psychologist in Toronto, Canada, says that when they keep reading the same book over and over again, they develop more vocabulary. They can get new information from each loop
2. Strengthen Memory
Sunita Shah Bsc (Hons), MRCSLT, MASLTIP, HPCReg., pediatric speech & language therapist in the UK, say that repetition can strengthen children’s memories. He explained the findings that toddlers who only heard one story 3 times were much better at remembering the story and at the same time remembering new words than those who heard 3 different stories.
3. Increase Self Confidence
How can? By hearing the same story over and over, children will remember every detail of the story. He will be very attentive and will know if you add different snippets on each page or at the end of the story. They might even correct you.
Sunita says, “Repetition is your child’s way of reminding himself of what he knows. He enjoys the joy of doing right every time. ” This can increase his self-confidence.
4. Delivers a sense of security and comfort
According to Sunita, when learning more about the world around her, your little one sometimes feels overwhelmed by all the new information he receives. He said, “repeating a familiar story will help convince him that everything is as it should be.” This will give them a feeling of security.
On the other hand, Cummings also stated that repetition presents predictability. They knew what was coming — and matched their expectations. That, according to Cummings, gives a feeling that they can be in control. “It provides comfort for them,” he said.
5. A Powerful Lullaby
Reading story books can be an alternative sleep ritual when you start weaning your little one. Cummings says that repeating the same storybook will make it easier for your little one to reach a calm state and eventually fall asleep.
