Wow! Here are the benefits of ginger for your health

KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. Temulawak is not only nutritious to increase endurance. Apparently, ginger also has other benefits for health.

Temulawak is a pseudo-stemmed plant with exotic flowers that are reddish white. This plant with the Latin name Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb has a relatively large rhizome with bright yellow slices.

Temulawak, also known as Javanese turmeric, is a plant originating from Indonesia, and is now widespread in several neighboring countries, such as Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Temulawak habitat is tropical forest with loose soil in an area with an altitude of 5-1,500 meters above sea level (masl).
However, this plant can also grow in dry land, yards, fields and Imperata fields. So far, the part of the plant that is commonly used is the rhizome.

Head of Research and Development Center for Medicinal and Traditional Medicinal Plants (B2P2TOOT) of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), Akhmad Saikhu, MSc. PH., Explained that ginger has been shown to have a number of health benefits if consumed.

Based on the results of research B2P2TOOT Tawangmangu, Karanganyar, Central Java, ginger not only has a good effect to increase endurance or immunity.

In the ginger rhizome, several chemical compounds are found, as follows:

  • Fellandrean and turmerol or what is often called evaporating oil
  • Essential oil
  • Kamfer
  • Glycosides
  • Foluymetic carbinol
  • Curcuminoid consisting of curcumin and desmetokskurcumin Xanthorizol.

Health benefits of ginger

Because of the chemical content above, ginger is then considered to have benefits besides immunity, namely as follows:

  • Neutralizes poison
  • Relieve pain
  • Antibacterial
  • Prevent fatty tissue in the liver
  • Antitoxin
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • Lowering triglycerides or fat that is found in the blood
  • Increase milk production in nursing mothers

Saikhu explained that based on the results of research which has also been published in the Book of the Top 100 Indonesian Medicinal Plants (2011) published by B2P2TOOT, curcuma stew can increase bile secretion so that it is efficacious for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides.

Therefore, sufferers of bile duct obstruction and sufferers of gallstone pain are not recommended to consume ginger.

“Curcuma rhizome stew is also good for breastfeeding mothers to consume because it can increase milk production,” explained Saikhu when contacted by Kompas.com, Saturday (18/4/2020). (Irawan Sapto Adhi)
