What is Himalayan salt?
Launching Healthline, Himalayan salt is salt mined from the Khewra salt mining area, near the Himalayas, Pakistan.
The Khewra salt mine is one of the oldest and largest salt mines in the world.
This mine is believed to have been formed millions of years ago. Himalayan salt is extracted manually and has minimal refining process, so this salt has minimal chemical additives.
However, like regular salt or table salt, Himalayan salt is high in sodium chloride.
How to use Himalayan salt is similar to regular salt. Namely for cooking, seasoning food, to remove dead skin cells while bathing, etc.

The difference between Himalayan salt and regular salt
Thanks to natural processing supported by different mineral content from ordinary salt, Himalayan salt has a pink color.
One of the minerals that make the Himalayan salt pink is iron.
One study analyzed the nutritional content of various types of salt including himalayan salt and common salt (table salt). Here are the results:
Himalayan salt per one gram contains:
- Calcium: 1.6 milligrams
- Potassium: 2.8 milligrams
- Magnesium: 1.06 milligrams
- Iron: 0.0369 milligrams
- Sodium: 368 milligrams
Regular salt (table salt) per one gram has:
- Calcium: 0.4 milligrams
- Potassium: 0.9 milligrams
- Magnesium: 0.0139 milligrams
- Iron: 0.0101 milligrams
- Sodium: 381 milligrams

As can be seen from the comparison of the nutritional content of the two salts above, table salt has more sodium than Himalayan salt.
Meanwhile, Himalayan salt contains more calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron.
However, the difference in the nutritional content of the two types of salt is very small or insignificant.
To meet the need for potassium per day, for example, it takes 1.7 kilograms of hilamaya salt per day.
This amount is not realistic for consumption, because excessive salt consumption can actually be harmful to health. (Mahardini Nur Afifah)
