KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. United States (US) gave Indonesia the opportunity to submit submissions to USTR (United States Trade Representative) up to the period Public Hearing which ended last July 18 2018 in order to defend the top position review of the Generalized System of Preference (GSP). This opportunity was given due to allegations of barriers to market access for US goods, services and investment.
“This will determine whether or not Indonesia is eligible as a recipient of the GSP given by the United States to developing countries,” said Shinta Widjaja Kamdani, Deputy Chair of the Employers’ Association (Apindo) in the field of International Relations and Investment to Kontan.co.id. Tuesday (24/7).
He also added that of the 3,500 tariff concessions given to Indonesia, only 519 products had the benefits of using the GSP in 2017. And of the 519 products, only a few are Indonesia’s leading export products.
Shinta also said that Indonesia’s export products that received the most benefits from GSP were electronic components (HS 85) such as electric drives, copper coiled cables, electric conductors, manganese batteries, electric switches, and electric lighting which together constituted 14.99% of the total. US GSP benefits used by Indonesia.
Based on information received by Apindo and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), the results of this GSP review will only come out around the end of 2018. This review itself is the second in 2018, which is a periodic review of USTR to assess the feasibility of providing mechanisms for several products that have already and will be given to Indonesia.
“Based on the information we get, the results will only come out around the end of this year. This review itself is the second in 2018, the first is a periodic review of USTR. And the results of this GSP will also only be published at the end of June 2018,” he explained.
