Benefits of Sauna for Health

Jakarta: Sauna activities were first carried out about 10,000 years ago in Finland. In fact, the word sauna means bath or bath in Finnish. Nowadays, saunas are very easy to find in almost all countries.

Researchers found that doing a sauna can have a variety of health benefits. Launch Insider following the health benefits of a sauna:

1. Get rid of toxins

“Sauna baths can cause sweating and increase the excretion of various toxins including heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, BPA, flame retardants, phthalates, and many more,” says James DiNicolantonio, PharmD, cardiovascular research scientist.

2. Improve the cardiovascular system

A 2015 study concluded that frequent use of saunas led to fewer cardiovascular-related deaths. In particular, death from coronary heart disease was 27 percent lower in men. The man in question is doing the sauna two to three times per week

While 50 percent lower for men who use the sauna four to seven times a week, compared with men who use the sauna once a week.

3. Increase endurance when exercising

A small 2020 study concluded that a sauna session after 3 weeks of exercise increases exercise endurance. This study also supports heat tolerance as a way to improve exercise performance in moderate conditions.

4. Improve the immune system

Our bodies increase the production of heat shock proteins (HSPs) when we go to the sauna. HSP prevents our body from overheating and also stimulates the immune system. The increased HSP during a sauna has resulted in many health benefits.

“Research has shown that sauna bathing has been associated with a lower risk of pneumonia, influenza and the common cold,” said DiNicolantonio.

5. Reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia

The use of a sauna can even help brain function. A 2017 study of Finnish men aged 42-60 concluded that using a sauna four to seven times a week reduced the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease by 65 to 66 percent.

6. Make the body more relaxed

One of the well-known benefits of a sauna is that it increases feelings of relaxation. In a 2019 global survey, 83.5 percent of respondents reported the benefits of sleep after one to two sauna uses per week, as well as an increase in their level of mental well-being.
