Benefits of Fish Oil for Pets Page all
KOMPAS.com – Besides being beneficial for humans, fish oil is also good for our pets at home.
If you have a dog or a cat, these two animals can benefit from the nutrients and minerals found in fish oil.
“The top nutrients in fish oil include omega fatty acids, which are great for the function of the skin, joints, heart and brains of pets,” said Dr Ryan Rucker, spokesman for DVM and Zesty Paws.
“I usually use fish oil for my dogs and cats for healthy skin, coat and joint support, and this oil is also good for the heart and brain,” he added.
However, giving this supplement to pets cannot be arbitrary. We need to consult a veterinarian.
Rucker suggests what to know about giving fish oil to pets, and the benefits behind it.

Giving fish oil to pets
In general, fish oil is given to animals as a liquid addition to their diet.
“Pets often think it’s a snack, although some animals don’t like the taste or smell of fishy,” said Rucker.
“For animals that don’t like the fishy taste or smell, there is also fish oil that can be chewed gently.”
He continued, fish oil is usually given once a day to animals. The dose depends on the animal’s body weight.

Choosing the right fish oil
Rucker suggests fish oil supplements from wild-caught fish sources rather than farm-raised fish.
Next, research the product and the ingredients in it. Make sure there are no contaminants or additives that are incompatible with our pet cat or dog.
If you have any doubts about giving your pet fish oil, it’s a good idea to consult a veterinarian.

The best ingredient in fish oil supplements is Alaskan salmon, which is high in EPA, DHA, and omega-3 fatty acids, according to Rucker.
“These ingredients are the most sought after for overall health,” he said.
Essential fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) support vision and neuronal development.
Meanwhile, omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in the body and help relieve problems related to heart disease and kidney disease.
These three acids help keep your pet’s skin and hair healthy.
Using fish oil on kittens and puppies will improve their brain function, and help them grow and develop better.
In adult pets, fatty acids can maintain reproductive health and physical condition.
Fish oil is also used to treat animal health problems, such as certain types of cancer in dogs.
