SKPT Development Can Help Overcome Fish Theft, If ...

ACCURATE.CO Destructive Fishing Watch (DFW) Indonesia stated that the construction of an integrated marine and fisheries center (SKPT) can help in overcoming illegal fishing activities by empowering local fishermen around the center.

“The development of the SKPT has three benefits, one of which is overcoming illegal fishing,” said DFW Indonesia National Coordinator Moh Abdi Suhufan in Jakarta, launching Antara, Wednesday (3/3/2021).

According to him, the construction of the SKPT can overcome illegal fishing by foreigners by empowering fishing fleets that fill border areas at sea.

Thus, he continued, the waters around Natuna, Morotai and Moa would be filled with local fishermen so that foreign fishing boats were reluctant to enter national waters.

Abdi said that other benefits are reducing disparities in fisheries infrastructure, which has been concentrated in Java Island, and accelerating development in maritime border areas.

“Apart from infrastructure development, fishermen’s economic institutions such as cooperatives and access to credit must also be facilitated,” he said.

Previously, Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided grant funding support of IDR 704 billion for the construction of SKPT in as many as six outer islands in Indonesia.

“The second phase of grants (grants) has been signed between the Government of Indonesia and the Government of Japan. So, through the KKP, Indonesia will receive a grant of 5.5 billion yen or the equivalent of Rp. 704 billion,” said KKP Secretary General Antam Novambar during the signing of the grant agreement for the second phase PPKT program. at the KKP Office, Jakarta, Tuesday (2/2/2020).

The Secretary General of the KKP also revealed that the six regions, namely Natuna, Morotai, Sabang, Saumlaku, Moa, and Biak, were determined by the JICA or Japan after obtaining a grid from the KKP.
