KONTAN.CO.ID -JAKARTA. A number of parties assess that the fishermen empowerment carried out by PT Pertamina (Persero) to clean up oil spills on the coast of Karawang waters, West Java is able to provide economic benefits to them when they cannot go to sea.

Economic observer from Mulawarman University (Unmul) Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Aji Sofyan Effendi in his statement in Jakarta, Thursday (5/9) said that when the wave conditions were high, fishermen did not go to sea and did not get any catch.

“The fishing work pattern is like that. When the weather is not favorable, they cannot fish and earn no income. Empowerment by Pertamina during the high waves actually brings benefits, “said Aji.

Just so you know, about one and a half months since the YYA-1 ONWJ well was leaked, Pertamina involved local fishermen to help clean up the oil spills that reached the coast.

The limited ability of fishermen, he continued, makes them only able to wait for the waves to improve, in addition, they are also constrained by the distance to the city to find other jobs. “So what Pertamina has done by giving jobs to fishermen is correct,” said Aji.

Furthermore, Aji assessed that Pertamina also pays attention to occupational health and safety (K3) factors, namely by carrying out health checks on fishermen, and completing adequate equipment, such as masks.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Rukun Nelayan (RN) of Pusakajaya Utama Village, Cilebar District, Karawang Regency, Gopar, revealed that the wave conditions are high in these months so that fishermen often cannot go to sea to find fish, as a result, they do not get income.

“With this condition, fishermen will prefer to stay at home. Indeed, there are also fishermen who force to go to sea, especially when the wind subsides. However, the catch during these months is also relatively small,” he said.

For this reason, continued Gopar, fishermen seem to have received blessings from the empowerment of Pertamina because they now have additional jobs which of course can increase family income.
