Benefits of Eating Nuts in Your 40s

Consumption of nuts can also provide benefits in preventing dementia.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Nuts are known as a healthy food that is easy to process and has a delicious taste. For people in their 40s, consumption of nuts can also provide benefits in preventing dementia.

This was revealed through a study conducted by a research team from the National University of Singapore. The study involved nearly 17,000 people who were monitored from 1993 to 2016. During the study, the research team monitored the participants’ diet and cognitive function.

Studies published in journals Age and Aging This revealed that people who ate nuts twice or more per week had a lower risk of developing memory problems by the time they reached 60 years of age. Their risk was 20 percent lower compared to people who only ate nuts less than once per month.

Apart from that, this study also revealed that people who ate nuts about once per week also got the same health benefits. They had a 19 percent lower risk of developing cognitive impairment in their 60s, 70s, and 80s.

This is not the first study to highlight the connection between nut consumption and a sharper mind. As reported Independent, a 2019 study involving nearly 5,000 participants over the age of 55 showed that consuming two teaspoons of nuts per day can improve cognitive function.

The research team said that consumption of nuts can improve a person’s thinking, memory and thinking skills by up to 60 percent compared to people who do not eat nuts.

Regarding lowering the risk of dementia, there are several other measures recommended by Alzheimer’s Research UK. Some of these include avoiding smoking, maintaining healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels, doing regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, having a balanced diet, and minimizing alcohol consumption.

Habits that promote heart health are also said to help lower the risk of dementia. Some of these include the consumption of foods that are sources of unsaturated fat such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, and avocados.

There are some early symptoms of dementia that you can also watch out for. The early symptoms of dementia are memory loss, difficulty concentrating, difficulty carrying out normal tasks, difficulty following conversations or finding the right words, confusion about time and place, and mood swings. These symptoms generally begin at a mild level and then worsen over time.
