Wow! Peaches Have Been Around 2.6 Million Years Ago
Bisnis.com, KUNMING – Research on peach seed fossils shows that the fruit existed more than 2.6 million years ago, much older than previously assumed, according to researchers, Saturday (5/12/2015).
Eight peach seed fossils found in Kunming, southwest China, are 2.6 million years old.
The previously unearthed peach seed fossils are no more than 10,000 years old, Su Tao, a paleoecologist at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG), told the Xinhua news agency.
The peach seed fossils also reinforce the belief that peaches originated in China. The peach tree (Prunus persica) was once believed to have originated in Persia, Central Asia, said Su Tao.
Primates may have eaten peaches before humans, according to research with XTBG, the University of Pennsylvania, the Kunming Institute of Botany, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Kunming University of Science and Technology.
In addition, according to Su Tao, the peach seed fossils provide scientists with clues about the environment and climate 2.6 million years ago, which could be the subject of further research.
The results of the research on the first peach seed fossils discovered in 2010 were published in the British journal Scientific Reports in late November with the title “Peaches preceded man: Fossil evidence from Southwest China.”
