Exhibition of Nuclear Benefits at UN Headquarters, Coordinating Minister for Women Promotes Herbal Medicine

Vienna, The Indonesian government held an exhibition on the benefits of nuclear technology in industrial development and economic development at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The exhibition was opened by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK) Puan Maharani on the sidelines of the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science and Technology, 28 November 2018.
In his speech, the Coordinating Minister for Women promoted herbal medicine made in Indonesia which was packaged using nuclear irradiation technology. These herbs have now entered a competitive global market thanks to the use of irradiation technology.
“One of the unique products that we are exhibiting here is herbal medicine. Jamu is a traditional Indonesian drink made from herbal ingredients. With the use of irradiation technology, herbal medicine products made in Indonesia have entered a competitive global market, ”said the Coordinating Minister for Women in his speech.
The exhibition entitled “Reaping Benefits from Radiation Technology: Strengthening the Industrial Sector, Contributing to Economic Development” shows the contribution of the use of irradiation technology in improving the quality of life of the Indonesian people, among others through advancing the national strategic sector and increasing MSMEs. Apart from herbal medicine, other packaging products were also exhibited. such as herbal medicines and food products.
One of the highlights is the collaboration between Indonesia and Hungary in building a gamma irradiator called Merah Putih with a local content of up to 84 percent. The first similar facility owned by Indonesia was inaugurated by Vice President Jusuf Kalla in November 2017 and is expected to become a model for future development.
“With an improved capacity in this field, Indonesia is ready to play a bigger role in helping developing countries, among others through South-South Cooperation,” said the Coordinating Minister for Women.
Apart from the exhibition, Indonesia also held a side event in the form of a discussion with the theme “Socio-Economic Benefits of the Application of Radiation Technology” which discusses the benefits of radiation technology for developing countries and efforts to increase the use of radiation technology that has socio-economic impacts.
