7 benefits of maintaining plants in the house, not just beautifying the room
A study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology found that plants in the home or office can make a person feel more comfortable, calm, and natural.
In the study, participants were given two different tasks: changing potted ornamental plants or completing a short computer-based task. After each task, researchers measured biological factors associated with stress, including heart rate and blood pressure.
They found that indoor gardening tasks decreased the stress response in participants. On the other hand, computer tasks led to spikes in heart rate and blood pressure, even though the study participants were young men accustomed to computer work.
Researchers have concluded that working with plants can reduce physiological and psychological stress.
